California Sinkhole Swallows Vehicle, Portion Of Street
A large sinkhole opened up on a street located in Downey, California, swallowing up a vehicle and a large portion of the street. The section of town is now closed off to the public as an investigation into the sinkhole happens.
The cause of the sinkhole seems to stem from an accident that occurred on Saturday night. During the accident, a fire hydrant was compromised and flooded the area with water. The drive of the car claims to have been averting a sure accident by running her car off the road and knocking over a powerline pole as well as damaging the fire hydrant.
It is likely that the rushing water from the compromised hydrant exasperated the sinkhole and caused it to open up.
