DC Police Bodycam Footage Shows Deon Kay Brandish Gun
Newly released D.C. Police bodycam video shows a police officer shoot a man that attempts to raise a handgun. The deceased, Deon Kay, allegedly has known affiliations with local gangs. The shooting by police sparked civil unrest in D.C. overnight. The officer, identified by WTOP as Alexander Alvarez, appears to clearly shoot the man in self-defense. Although the evidence is clear in the video, it did not stop protesters from accosting law enforcement officers throughout the night on the streets of D.C.
A Metropolitan Police Department statement said, “An officer observed Mr. Kay brandish a firearm and subsequently the officer discharged his service weapon once, striking Mr. Kay in the chest.” The statement was released alongside the video, which backs up the claims by the department.
This did not stop D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser from deeming the event as “tragic” and calling Kay’s family to console them.
“Our community is hurting, and we know that they want answers,” Bowser said.
Police Chief Peter Newsham said that officers had observed Kay on a social media live stream prior to the interaction that led to the shooting, though it’s unclear what the content of that live stream was.
Newsham said called Kay a “validated gang member” who had “multiple touches” with law enforcement.
“I’m pretty sure that Deon Kay fell through multiple safety nets before yesterday afternoon at just before 4 o’clock,” Newsham said.
