Fasting for three days can regenerate entire immune system, study finds
Scientists have made a breathrough discovery: Fasting, even for as few as 3 days, can regenerate your entire immune system. They are describing the breakthrough as “remarkable.”
While there have been many critics to the concept of fasting over the years, science is now revealing the a fast from food and drink calories can stimulate stem cells which results in producing new white blood cells, and this can help stave off any infections.
The University of Southern California scientists, according to the Telegraph, are especially excited about the wonderful benefits this could have on cancer patients who have endured rigorous chemotherapy treatments which destroy the immune system. It could also help elderly people who naturally are more prone to illnesses due to lowered immune function.
The researchers say fasting “flips a regenerative switch.”
“It gives the ‘OK’ for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and rebuild the entire system,” said Prof Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology and the Biological Sciences at the University of California.
“And the good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old, the inefficient parts, during the fasting.
“Now, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or ageing, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system.”
Fasting for long periods of time thrust the body into a fat and glucose burning phase. It also tends to deplete white blood cells.
But its the depletion of white blood cells which triggers the stem cells into action. And then, the miracle of regeneration occurs.
And the news gets even better: Scientists found that prolonged fasting also reduced the enzyme PKA, which is linked to ageing and a hormone which increases cancer risk and tumour growth.
“We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-based regeneration of the hematopoietic system,” added Prof Longo.
Many people view the concept of fasting negatively. People have been socially programmed to believe they must eat 3 to 4 times per day. Intermittent fasting proponents have slowly changed the perspectives of a great many people who are either trying to lose weight and improve health, or increase athletic ability.
