A Democratic New York City Councilman is crediting the controversial drug, hydroxychloroquine, with saving his life. While President Trump often touts hydroxychloroquine as a potential treatment for COVID-19, his opponents across the aisle typically lambaste him and his administration for the claims.
The Northeast Queens representative, Paul Vallone, says he used hydroxychloroquine alongside a Z-Pack and now he’s back to normal. According to Vallone, prior to hydroxychloroquine, his situation was dire.
“I couldn’t breathe, very weak, couldn’t get out of bed. My doctor prescribed it. My pharmacy had it. Took it that day and within two to three days I was able to breathe,” Vallone told The New York Post. “Within a week I was back on my feet.”
On April 1, Vallone signaled over social media that his COVID-19 symptoms were mild. But it seems he wasn’t being completely transparent. Vallone suffers from an auto-immune disease called sarcoidosis, which happens to attack the lungs. COVID-19 reputably attacks the lungs, as well. The combination of the two caused Vallone to fair particularly bad following the COVID-19 diagnosis. He claims that as a downward spiral set in, it was hydroxychloroquine to the rescue.
“We were in panic mode when I went down because I didn’t have a lot of immune response,” he said. “I needed something to stay alive.”
Hydroxychloroquine “worked for me,” Vallone emphasized to The Post.
Vallone’s brother has long supported the use of hydroxychloroquine, going as far as to label condemnation against it as disingenuous.
“I guess all those doctors who are prescribing it are right. This drug is already on the market and the patent is up so it’s cheap. A new drug won’t be. So big money does not want this drug to be used. Always follow the money,” Peter Vallone
Paul Vallone now says that hydroxychloroquine “saved my life.”
President Trump has long claimed that many essential workers, including those in the medical field, use Hydroxychloroquine. But as Democrats rally around the “never Trump” battle cry, it appears that hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment continues to show promise. Some believe that Democrats condemning the drug are putting a shot at regaining political power ahead of human health. So far, it’s difficult to argue that science continues to support hydroxychloroquine.
Many hospitals claim hydroxychloroquine fails to work once COVID-19 symptoms set in, but science seems to indicate that it works for people who may be high-risk of contracting COVID-19. In other words, take the pill before or right as you contract COVID-19, and you fair better. If this is the case, it liens up with what Trump’s been saying in regards to frontline workers taking the drug.
