Following Virginia’s sweep towards liberalism during this year’s election, the state seems to now be hurtling towards potential conflict. And it’s all centered around the likely passage of stringent gun control laws, some which may include the banning of popular semi-automatic firearms. Most of the state’s counties are conservative, Second amendment supporting as a whole. Those counties are now at odds with the few liberal counties who want strong gun laws and bans.

Democrats now hold power in both chambers, this has eliminated any conservative voices. The state’s Democrats want to now pursue an “assault weapons” ban, and a red flag laws. And they should have no issue succeeding.

But at least 75 counties across the state are refusing to comply. Elected officials in these counties are calling themselves, “Second Amendment sanctuary counties,” a clear jab at immigration sanctuary counties that notoriously sprung up following the election of Donald Trump.

In a Second Amendment sanctuary county, the sheriff’s office would not enforce the state’s gun laws.

Now the state’s Democrats say they are ready to take action against these sheriffs.

“I would hope they either resign in good conscience, because they cannot uphold the law which they are sworn to uphold, or they’re prosecuted for failure to fulfill their oath,” Democratic Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly told the Washington Examiner of local county police who may refuse to enforce future gun control measures. “The law is the law. If that becomes the law, you don’t have a choice, not if you’re a sworn officer of the law.”

Further threats include cutting off county funding and sending the National Guard into wage battle.

“And ultimately, I’m not the governor, but the governor may have to nationalize the National Guard to enforce the law,” Democratic Virginia Rep. Donald McEachin said. “That’s his call, because I don’t know how serious these counties are and how severe the violations of law will be. But that’s obviously an option he has.”

The threats of enforcement have many believing that Virginia could serve as the beginning of a burgeoning civil war. Ever since Hillary Clinton lost the Presidency to Donald Trump, the battle lines between liberals and conservatives have become more defined. Suggestions of civil war have ripened as many don’t see any way the two sides can work together.

Democrats have notoriously refused to enforce immigration laws across the nation. They believe that not cooperating with ICE is not, in and of itself, illegal. But denying the enforcement of gun laws, according to the same Democrats, is illegal.

If Democrats were to call in National Guard troops, what would such a climate look like? How many National Guard troops would refuse to perform these duties? And what happens when police or troops go door to door to confiscate guns?

For many citizens, the idea of a civil war hardly feels like a conspiracy anymore. It’s becoming more and more a reality as our elected officials continue to over govern.
