Trump To Reopen Country Next Week, According To Reports
According to new reports, President Donald Trump may look to reopen the country at the 15-day limit. Yesterday, both Trump and Vice President Pence consistently referenced the “15-day quarantine effort,” leading many to believe that the administration does indeed, have a timeline for putting Americans back to work.
This seems to be the case.
“WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF. AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!” Trump tweeted late Sunday.
Trump reportedly held private meetings regarding a national reopen as a way to halt the vast economic damage being done currently. If the reports, first posted on Yahoo! Finance, are true, that means the national shutdown ends on March 31.
As more people encounter family and friends that are out of work than they do who have coronavirus, the national opinion over a longterm lockdown is changing.
But a problem remains.
States such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey won’t have to stop their forced lockdowns. At least not initially. Governors and mayors remain empowered to “shelter in place” their jurisdictions and states. However, Trump’s change in tone would likely inspire those looking at longterm unemployment or loss of business to pressure political figures into ceasing the orders. Beyond that, Trump could potentially seek litigation and other strategies to challenge states.
“We’ll get a pretty good idea what we’re doing” at the end of his “15 Days to Slow the Spread” campaign on March 31, Trump said Sunday. “You know there will be a point at which we say: ‘We’re back in business, let’s go.”
‘Drop the Hammer’
If Trump does order a national reopen, expect blowback from his ardent critics, including some in his administration. It could spark a national debate more divisive than any in recent memory.
