U.K. Parliament Seizes Facebook Documents Using Draconian Tactics
The UK parliament seized private Facebook documents in a “rare” flex of legal power. The documents may contain insight into Facebook’s privacy controls and are allegedly related to the Cambridge Analytica investigation.
Damian Collins, chairman of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee, said that the investigation into Facebook is “unprecedented territory;” hence, Collins strongly justified the U.K.s seizure of Facebook’s private data.
“We are in uncharted territory. This is an unprecedented move but it’s an unprecedented situation. We’ve failed to get answers from Facebook and we believe the documents contain information of very high public interest.” Collins said via the Observer.
British MPs seized the opportunity to get access to the documents when a software company executive landed in London. The executive’s company is currently in litigation against Facebook. The parliament realized that the executive would be carrying the private documents. British authorities reportedly threatened the executive with prison time he/she did not turn over the private documents.
Facebook “has not answered our questions about who knew what, when with regards to the Cambridge Analytica scandal”. Collins further stated.
“We have followed this court case in America and we believed these documents contained answers to some of the questions we have been seeking about the use of data, especially by external developers.”
Facebook’s legal team responded to the document seizure with the following:
“The materials obtained by the DCMS committee are subject to a protective order of the San Mateo Superior Court restricting their disclosure.
“We have asked the DCMS committee to refrain from reviewing them and to return them to counsel or to Facebook.
“We have no further comment.”
So yes, the British just took private legal documents from a United States citizen using mafia-like, draconian tactics. One has to wonder when Big Tech will see the light and realize that those they’ve aligned themselves with are going to cannibalize them.
What could a socialist country like the U.K. do with access to Facebook’s private algorithm?
Although, we don’t believe they gained any critical insights. However, such things remain to be seen.
